For her birthday, Anna and I saw the movie Becoming Jane, which stars Anne Hathaway of The Princess Diaries (2001) and Brokeback Mountain (2005) as the English novelist, Jane Austen. I found it entertaining and intriguing because it weaves a tale about Ms. Austen’s experiences and relationships and how they influenced her writings especially Pride and Prejudice. Many of the characters from that novel have striking resemblances to her family members and people in her life depicted in the movie.
I haven’t read any of her novels, but I have seen many a film based on them. This is mainly due to Anna’s recent obsession with all things Austen. Much in the same way she has absorbed knowledge of the Star Wars universe from just being near me. And now that I think of it, one could do a comparative study of Fitzwilliam Darcy and Han Solo. That abominable Mr. Darcy vs. the scruffy-looking nerf herder!
In addition, I was impressed with Jane’s ability and courage to challenge the establishment at the time by becoming a female novelist and by turning down a marriage proposal that would have allowed her financial support in her endeavors. In a telling and comical scene, she steps up to face Tom Lefroy (her possible real life Mr. Darcy) in a game of cricket when no more gentlemanly batsmen do. Jane wields the cricket bat as well as Princess Leia fires a blaster and wins the match for her team.
One last note, Rosie and I recently watched The Cat Returns produced by Hayao Miyazaki, and I noticed that Anne Hathaway provided the voice of Haru, the film’s protagonist.
