The year that was January 2, 2008

Posted by davegoblog in Blogging, Family, History, NaBloPoMo, Personal.

Hey, a blog post that reviews happenings or stuff from the previous year. That sounds like an original idea…riiiight. So, here’s my life from 2007 – the short form:

  • January: I started my new job as an employee of Sherwin-Williams on January 2, 2007 (one year ago today), and I’ve been painting the town ever since then. Okay, I’ve been mostly cutting up and painting parts of trucks and buses, but it’s been definitely fun! Watched Napoleon Dynamite for the first time.
  • February: Valentine’s Day Blizzard, and the florist still delivered flowers for Anna. Lily baptized on the last Sunday of the month.
  • March: We saw Brian Regan at the beginning of the month and visited North Carolina at the end of the month. My Mom went into the hospital on March 23 because of bad stomach pains.
  • April: Lily sat up by herself for the first time. Lily’s first Easter. My first Twitter post.
  • May: My Mom had her second and third surgeries. Rosie and I drove to PA to visit my Mom for Mother’s Day, although she was in ICU the whole time. Season finales for Heroes and Lost. Saw George R.R. Martin in Second Life as Tyrion Lannister.
  • June: Rosie completed Kindergarten, began swim team, and had her dance recital all within three days. We became members of First Congregational United Church of Christ. Rosie turned 6 and lost her first tooth, while I was burning 36 candles. My first work trip to lovely Ft. Wayne, IN.
  • July: Lily started crawling. All of us drove to PA for Independence Day. My Mom had her fourth surgery. Rosie swam in the Championship Swim Meet, and we bought Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows later that day.
  • August: Anna and I celebrated our ninth anniversary by going to the house from “A Christmas Story” and enjoying a wonderful meal at an Indian restaurant. My first blog post on Living in the now. Went sailing with the whole family on Sandusky Bay near Cedar Point on Anna’s brother’s friend’s boat. Rosie and I attended our first Cleveland Indians baseball game. Rosie lost her second tooth and started 1st grade.
  • September: My Mom celebrated her birthday in the hospital. Lily got her first tooth, took two steps, and started climbing steps. Rosie and I helped assemble kits for National Chemistry Week. Anna and I went for an RIT Alumni cruise on Lake Erie.
  • October: Lily’s first visit to the emergency room. The 20th annual National Chemisty Week. Halloween parties from the middle of October until the end of the month. Switched to Time Warner Cable and got DVR!
  • December: Mom’s eighth surgery. Rosie walked in the Light Up Berea parade. Vote at the church. Holiday music program, Christmas pageant, cookies, cookies, and more cookies! Lily’s second Christmas and Rosie’s seventh one. Rosie almost stayed awake until 2008. Maybe next year.

My sister and her fiancé recently visited Las Vegas, and one of their sightseeing stops was Madame Tussauds.  Here’s a picture they took with her and a Commander Guy.  Thanks for all the NaBloPoMo fun this month!

NaBloPoMo-hide! November 29, 2007

Two more days, two more posts.  In honor of National Blog Posting Month ending tomorrow and with a little inspiration from “Weird Al” Yankovic, here are my lyrics for “NaBloPoMo-hide” that should be sung to the tune of Rawhide:

Bloggin’, bloggin’, bloggin’
Bloggin’, bloggin’, bloggin’
Bloggin’, bloggin’, bloggin’
Bloggin’, bloggin’, bloggin’

Bloggin’, bloggin’, bloggin’
Though my fingers are swollen
Keep them bloggies bloggin’
Memes and pics and blather
Comments I’ll gather
Wishin’ my gal (or guy) was by my side.
All the things I’m missin’,
Good movies, books, and kissin’,
Are waiting at the end of my ride

Post ’em on, type ’em up
Type ’em up, Post ’em on
Post ’em on, type ’em up
Count ’em down, check ’em off,
Check ’em off, count ’em down,
Count ’em down, check ’em off

Keep postin’, postin’, postin’
Our sites are a hostin’,
Keep them bloggies postin’
Don’t try to understand ’em
Just write and type and post ’em,
Soon our hits’ll be high and wide.
The blog stats calculatin’
December will be waitin’,
Be waitin’ at the end of my ride.

Lotus Notes, why do you vex me? November 27, 2007

Posted by davegoblog in NaBloPoMo, Personal, Technology.

About two weeks ago, I had a couple of skimishes with Lotus Notes email functions.  “We put the *fun* or *func* in your functions.”  Anyway, the first was when I attempted to insert the degree symbol (as in ºF) into an email.  I checked “Help” on the menu bar, searched for inserting symbols, and was rewarded with some nonsense about Unicode, compose sequence, and extended compose sequence.  WTºF?!?  Shortly after that, I surrendered and just went with the big F in the email.

An hour later, I was replying to a different email to get a Holiday Roster for our facility, and I selected “Reply to All” instead of just clicking “Reply” button.  That normally wouldn’t be a problem except the original message was addressed to everyone in the Technical Division (almost 100 people!).  So, now they’re all expecting holiday cards.  It was a good laugh, and I only got a few snarky comments.  But, really…separate those buttons with something or at least put an early morning warning on them 🙂

I did finally figure out this morning how to insert symbols into Lotus Notes email messages.  To add the degree symbol, all I have to do is:

  1. Press ALT-F1.
  2. Press ALT-F1 again.
  3. Type “0-248” and I’m done.

What could be easier than that?

O-HI-O!!! We’re heading back to Ohio today, and my Mom went back to the hospital last night 😦 Everyone had a good visit. Mom was doing well throughout the whole time, but the skin where the ostomy pouch is attached gets very red and irritated from removing an old one and putting on a new one. So, it was decided for her to return to good old Lehigh Valley Hospital again. They’ve got better around the clock care than just my Dad, who does an amazing job for having a “weak” stomach. I helped change the pouch yesterday, and it’s quite a challenge for two non-medically trained people let alone one. He should have his EMT training completed soon 🙂

Oh well, we need to finish loading the van, then drive to the hospital, and finally begin our trip back to the Buckeye State…see you on the flip side.

RikerAfter an exciting trip to the Apple Store yesterday, we visited the house that my sister (Michele) and her fiancé (Mike) recently bought in Bethlehem, PA. It’s located next door to the house (see picture to the right) in which Jonathan Frakes (aka Cmdr. William T. Riker of Star Trek: The Next Generation) grew up. In addition, one of their neighbors said that Armin Shimerman (Quark from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) had also lived in the area. Who knew it was such a small galaxy?

GhostOn a supernatural note, there is apparently a ghost living in their house as well. Both Michele and Mike have heard footsteps in the upstairs, and he has even seen a grey-haired female apparition in the bathroom that shrank down into a small ball of light and disappeared. During their recent housewarming party, one of their friends who is a medium said that the ghost’s name is Amelia and that she feels safest in the bathroom and on the third floor. See if you can spot the balls of light on the right of the picture taken on the third floor before they moved there. Believe it…or not.

Trip to the Apple Store November 24, 2007

LilyAppleToday, we went to the new Apple Store at the Lehigh Valley Mall, in Whitehall, PA, to do some browsing and picture taking. If we had an electric hybrid car, then we would have been able to get a closer parking spot. But, we didn’t have too far to walk since we waited until Saturday after Black Friday. It was pretty crowded nevertheless, and Rosie headed straight to the back of the store where the “kid” computers were. She jumped on one right away and started played I SPY Mystery, which we have at home. Lily began exploring another iMac with Aunt Michele.

iPhoneAnna and I wandered around the store for a while and had fun trying out the iPhones on display. No iPhone for us, but it is definitely much cooler now that I’ve been able to use one. Anna pulled up our YouTube videos for Rosie to watch herself, and I tweeted and sent a text message. We finally had to leave without any purchases, but made a list for Michele and my parents just in case they happen along that way before Christmas. Fun was had by all. Check out more pictures from our excursion on our new Flickr page.

We were at my Aunt and Uncle’s house today in Carlisle, PA, with 14 adults, 4 kids, and 3 dogs for Thanksgiving. Now, we’ve made it to my parents’ house in Allentown…long two days. Time to rest for Black Friday!
